“A sound mind in a sound body, is a short, but full description of a happy state in this world” -John Locke
Sound Therapy—the use of vibrations to affect cellular resonance (the frequency at which an object naturally vibrates). Cellular resonance is found in each part of the body and can be affected by emotional and physical illness or environmental factors. Vibrational medicine is based on the idea that disease is a result of those natural resonances getting out of tune –brought on by depression, anxiety, and trauma. Used as an ancient practice originating in the eastern part of the world, sound therapy encourages mindfulness and self-awareness. In addition, it is a way to enhance relaxation in massage therapy and acupuncture sessions. Medical research shows that the use of sound therapy to treat those with illnesses decreases stress hormones in the body (The Healing Power of Sound).
When done individually or in a group setting, sound therapy has been shown to lend numerous physical and emotional benefits. Many illnesses have a direct relation to the amount of emotional stress one is experiencing. Therefore, methodologies that promote relaxation can be an excellent way to prevent and treat illnesses (The British Academy of Sound Therapy).
The most effective treatment facilities utilize a combination of Western and Eastern philosophies to address the unique needs of each client. Rapid advancements in medicine indicate that a total body treatment approach has successful outcomes. At Passages Malibu, we offer more holistic treatment methods than any other rehab center in the world. Our in-house Spiritual Counselor, Jesse Hanson, uses a variety of instruments in Sound Therapy including quartz crystal singing bowls, didgeridoos, Native American flutes, buffalo drums, and his own voice, among other unique instruments from around the world.
